Testing for Down Syndrome

In some countries, women can now have a blood test to determine whether or not their child will have Down syndrome.

According to the website of the BBC:

Scientists at Stanford University say they have developed a safer blood test that can tell a women if her unborn baby has Downs syndrome. Current tests include amniocentesis, in which a needle is used to take a sample of fluid from the womb. This can cause some women to miscarry.

In some countries, women can take a certain blood test to find out if their child will have a disability such as Down Syndrome. The BBC website states "Scientists at Stanford University say they have developed a safer blood test that can tell a women if her unborn baby has Downs syndrome. Current tests include amniocentesis, in which a needle is used to take a sample of fluid from the womb. This can cause some women to miscarry" So it is possible, but like anything these days, there are risks.

Can blood test concerning Down syndrome be wrong during pregnancy?

Yes. Quite commonly Down syndrome is diagnosed or highly suspected before birth. Prenatal ultrasound can be used to increase the suspicion of Down syndrome by evaluating the nuchal lucency during the 1st trimester. The triple screen (HCG, AFP, and estriol) can also point to a potential chromosomal abnormality. An amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling can clinch the diagnosis by allowing prenatal chromosomal analysis.

Where can you find information about someone who has both Down syndrome as well as Klinefelter's syndrome?

Causes of Klinefelter SyndromeThe additional sex chromosomes in men with Klinefelter syndrome results from nondisjunction during meiosis and may have a paternal (50 to 60 percent) or maternal (40 to 50 percent) origin. This contrasts with Down syndrome, which is caused predominantly by maternal nondisjunction and inheritance of the extra chromosome 21 from the mother.

Can you find out before 3 months if baby has Downs syndrome?

Physical indicators of Down syndrome are present at birth and many experienced doctors can tell immediately that a child has Down syndrome. However, to be sure, your child must have genetic testing done -- which can take a few weeks.

Is Down syndrome treatable?

== == No, there is no cure -- as of yet.Down syndrome is caused by having three of Chromosome 21 instead of the healthy two. There is no way to remove an extra chromosome, especially not from every cell in the whole body! The older the mother is, the more likely this is to occur. If the mother is 40 or older when she conceives, her chances of having a baby with Down skyrocket. Actually most cases of Down Syndrome occur in women under the age of 35.

How does the baby dolphin find food?

A baby dolphin does not need to find its own food. The mother takes care of that. The mother feeds its baby her milk. A whales milk is 10x richer then a cows!

How do you breast-feed a baby with Down syndrome?

Several factors determine the choice of options. In the U.S., the National Down Syndrome Society provides a starting point for research. (See "Related Links", below.) If you are in the U.S. (or anywhere else, for that matter) a local Support group is most helpful. (Try a Google search for "Down Syndrome support".) For U.S. residents, the NDSS website has a "Find Your Local Support Group" tool prominently displayed on its homepage. I'm sure that you will find compassionate and helpful information there. Good Luck.
