In most of the British Empire/Commonwealth countries using the now obsolete predecimal Pounds, Shillings and Pence currency, the Halfpenny was the lowest denomination of coin.

Some countries including Britain used a Farthing (quarter Penny) and a variety of fractional Farthing denominations such as a Half, Third or even Quarter Farthing.

In some countries, there are coins with values lower than a penny, such as the half-cent in the United States, which is no longer in circulation. Additionally, some currencies have coins worth even less than a penny, like the Japanese yen's 1 yen coin.

What is the value of a 1955 D cent?

Depends on the condition. Is it a double struck coin? The date on some of these cents was minted in error and it "appears twice" on the coin. That penny is worth some money. Anything else is worth less than a buck. Usually a lot less. Even the uncirculated1955 D cent is selling for less than a buck.

Why is a 1945 penny worth so much?

Old coins are valuable because they're old and rare. The 1945 penny isn't worth remarkably more than other coins of its approximate age (in fact, it's worth a lot less than a 1944 steel penny, or a 1943 copper penny, both of which are extremely rare).
