The name is traced back to 16th century in Sweden, but is probably much older and of uncertain origin. The first syllable "Tyr" is the same as one of the Gods in the Nordic mythology. Tyr was the son of the god Oden. Tyr lost his right hand as a pledge when the gods entangled the Wolf "Fenrisulven".
