"Whale Wars" is not staged. The Sea Shepard's are a conservationalist group that fights in protecting the rights and freedoms of many species of animals (not just whales) all over the world, year round. They are involved in many campaigns from protecting whales to protecting sharks, seals, dolphins, etc...
The incidents are videotaped to protect the innocence of the crew as well as to protect all those involved (physically and legally). Japan is in no way connected with the show on Animal Planet, nor will they allow ANY video to be taped inside any of their whaling research ships (even for documentaries).
As of February 10th, 2011.., Japan has temporarily suspended whaling in the Southern Ocean for next season (2011 - 2012). However, The Sea Shepard's will still patrol the area (just in case this information is false). Japan still has no comment on any of their actions since 2003.
"...It Starts With Humans to End the Slaughter of Innocent Animals..."
Yes, it is. Because right now Paul Watson is wanted by INTERPOL and is on the run. Fox News has a lot of stuff on it so you might want to check their website.
