mis fire would be my guess. the engine will shake and vibrate? its called a dead miss, where a cyl is "dead" if you smell gas, its not running rich. its not burning the fuel, its misfiring (which turns on the check engine light) could be ignition (spark to ignite fuel, not key ignition) problem, or low compression in cyl.
if you can get spark in every cyl (check at spark plug, not at rotor) then try to get a compression test done in each cyl
