Power is simply a rate -the rate of transfer of energy. The watt is simply the SI unit of power, whereas the horsepower is an Imperial unit of power. In other words, watts and horsepower both measure the same thing, and can be used interchangeably. If you wish, you could measure the power of an electric heater in horsepower, for example. A horsepower is equivalent to 746 watts.

In most countries outside the United States, the horsepower is considered obsolete and, for this reason, the output of motors (including automobile engines) are measured in watts (or kilowatts), not horsepower.
