It was based in part on the memoirs of lay missionary Gladys Aylward and was NOT a musical. It was adapted to a number of religious radio dramas, again sans music. In real life, the refugees marched to hymns such as Onward, Christian Soldiers!- not Knick Knack Paddy-whack, give the dog a bone! nonsense songs. It was heavy stuff to be mild about it. I do not know where the rather standoff-ish title came from, it may be something from Confucius. Movie version has been angled off as a C.B.I theatre version of The Sound of Music. not too bad a simile, but had only one song.+
Whack it with something?
Whale bone, also referred to as Sea Ivory, has been used for many different things. Scrimshaw has lead to many beautiful works of carved whale bone sculptures or picture carved into bone. The bones were so turn into utensil such as bits, mallets, clubs, jar, and used in the boning of corsets.
An excellent question! what amounted to the theme song of the violent Crime Western (Butch Cassidy) was the soft-toned Raindrops keep falling on my head- which had NO connection with the plot except a brief comic-relief sequence about an 0ld-time bicycle salesman. Even more to the point, the rollicking ( Children"s Marching song- Knick Knack Paddy-whack- give the dog a bone.. etc- was the theme song- and sung on the march- in the morose if not nose-dive depressing (Inn of the Sixth Happiness). going further afield, some ideas in theme songs are unworkable in reality- wishful thinking of past times ( My Favorite Things) does NOT disarm Dog Bites! and so on. it is amazing how many themes songs have nothing to do with the plot of the film but lure the audience.
well, if you fall hard enough it may just break a bone in your knee it happened to me or just whack it with a stick did that :D good luck!
