Many things, from a simple cyst to a cancerous growth. The lymp system goes to many places in your body, and the underarm is one of them, so if there is something bad there, it could quickly spread through the lymph system. A lump that comes on with a cold or other illness, stays a few days and then goes away is probably not worrisome, but if it comes back or stays after the illness - go see someone right away. If you are pregnant or nursing, it could be related to lactation, but don't take chances by ignoring it.
If it's on one or both of the sides of your jaw, it could be an infected lymph node. This happens from time to time when you pick up minor infections. ONe good test for this would be to see if you're running a temperature. Of course, when in doubt, see a pro. A well-meaning guy on the internet is no substitute for professional advice. The "pro" says: Lymphadenopathy, enlargement of the lymph nodes, is the most likely cause of an enlargement under the jaw. Other more serious problems may also occur, including lymphoma, lymphadenitis, dental abscesses, a sublingual abscess, a peritonsillar or retropharyngeal abscess, a tumor, mumps. Some congenital causes include a thyroglossal duct cyst, a branchial cleft cyst... the list could go on. Unfortunately, as cjonb so aptly put, a well-intentioned guy on the internet cannot see you, nor do we know your medical history and we cannot perform a physical exam. You should see your physician for a complete history and physical exam and not rely on a web site for a diagnosis.
possibly an abcess, seek immuno-boosters--compounds of onion, garlic, and other immune boosting plants in a capsule, and follow label instructions. These will calm an abscess, but as soon as your immunity gets low again it will come back, It is advisable to have it checked out by an MD at this point, unless you are willing to commit to a rigorous natural cure.

I have gotten those on occasion and think they are from shampoo or hair products left behind the ear. I clean the area with alcohol and try to remember to rinse really well behind the ear. Fluid will sometimes come out of them and I push the rest out.
A knot behind your left ear is probably a lymph gland. However, thyroid tissue can infrequently be found in other areas of the body outside of its normal placement. Early in embryonic development, the thyroid gland forms near the brain and migrates downward to its normal position in the lower neck. Sometimes "pieces" can be left behind during migration that function like normal thyroid tissue. Additionally, thyroid tissue can sometimes be found in the chest cavity or other body parts when the migration process has not gone properly. If you are worried about your thyroid, the lump, or cancer, go to your doctor for answers. Make sure you understand his/her explanation fully and ask for it to be noted in your chart including size, so if it appears to have grown you can go back and remeasure and seek further evaluation.AnswerThyroid cancer is in the neck. The knot behind your ear is probably part of your head. If you have had it awhile, and it hasn't grown, it is probably normal. You would have a knot in your neck if it were your thyroid.
