In an Italian / Petrarchan sonnet the lines are arranged 8 + 6 (Octave and Sestet) with a change in the point of view between the two halves (the Volta).

In an English /Shakespearian sonnet the lines go 4 + 4 + 4 + 2 (three quatrains, than a couplet) with the couplet usually summing up the idea which has been developed over the three quatrains.

Typical rimeschemes are ABBA ABBA CDE CDE (Italian) or ABAB CDCD EFEF GG (English), but the most important thing is the 8 + 6 arrangement for the Italian, and the 12 + 2 arrangement for the English sonnet/

An English Sonnet typically consists of three quatrains (four-line stanzas) followed by a couplet (a two-line stanza), totaling 14 lines. The quatrains usually follow the ABAB rhyme scheme, while the couplet often has a separate rhyme scheme (such as CC or EE). This structure helps distinguish an English sonnet from other forms like the Italian or Shakespearean sonnet.
