Virus: The most common form. Simple virus designed to disrupt or damage. Sometimes referred to as "common virus" or "basic virus".
Trojan: The second most common form. Designed to sneak past firewalls undetected. Named after the Trojan Horse. Can cause heavy damage if it isn't detected quickly by anti-viruses
Worms: A program that duplicates itself once it is on your system, making it extremely difficult to remove. Sometimes they're called "parasites".
Bootsector: A virus, usually of common form, that attaches itself to the part of your hard-disk that is read by your computer upon start-up, triggering the virus to activate the moment you turn your computer on.
Macro virus: Viruses that use the macro programming languages of other legitimate programs on your computer to hide itself. Very difficult to detect, sometimes upon removal, it permanently damages the program it was hiding within.
Memory resident virus (MRV): These reside in the computers volatile memory (RAM). They are initiated from a virus running on the computer and they stay in memory after it's initiating program closes.
Rootkit virus: An extremely malicious and almost-impossible to detect (with most anti-viruses) virus that allows someone on the outside to gain control of your computer. They are usually disguised as operating systems. Sometimes law enforcement agencies deliberately infect computers with this virus for the purpose of monitoring a suspects computer for illegal activity.
Polymorphic virus: Similar to a worm, but a lot more complex. This virus replicates itself once it has infected a computer, but it changes the digital signature every time it replicates, making it twice as hard to remove than worms.
RansomWare: One of the newest types which infects computers from infected torrent and music downloads. The virus locks your computer, claiming it's a law enforcement agency who have caught you illegally downloading. The message will say you need to pay a "fine", then your computer will be unlocked. This is a scam - it is not law enforcement and if you pay, the virus will still not be removed.
Time-bomb virus: These can be any form of the above viruses, but they are written to activate at a specific date or time. These are used by cybercriminals such as hackers to bring down government systems at a specific time. Sometimes they're called "logic bombs".
There are other programs that are similar to viruses, but they are not exactly viruses.
For example, malware. Malware is a program that exists to annoy or advertise, not to harm. Some malware causes constant pop-ups on computers while others will redirect links clicked on search engines to an irrelevant website.
Another example is keyloggers. These are malicious softwares that are usually hidden in toolbars and browser extensions, their main purpose is to record your keystrokes to steal passwords and banking details.
