The M16A1, Diemaco/Colt Canada C7, Diemaco/Colt Canada C8, and M4A1 have fully unrestricted automatic fire. The M16A2, M16A4, M16A5, and M4 are limited to a three round burst.

The standard issue weapon for a soldier is the M16a2.....and it only has semi, and 3 round burst. The older M16a1 used in Veitnam had a Full-auto setting, but soldiers would run out of ammo only 2 min into the fight. From personal experience, semi auto because it is more accurate than full auto. But that is just how I was taught to shoot in the army, maybe it is different for other armies. But it also depends on the situation you are in I guess. But usually when shooting at single targets, double shots are best followed by semi.

The first M-16's (the M-16A1's) that were used in Vietnam had a fully automatic setting on the selector switch. All other versions of the M-16: the A2, A3, and A4, are only capable of single and 3-round bursts. Licensed M16s are manufactured in other countries, who do not use the three round burst. Canada, South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia have all manufactured licensed M16 variants. And to correct a flaw in the first answer, the M16A3 actually is full auto - M16A3 was not a military nomenclature. The designation came from Colt, and it was intended to be an M16A2 for export customers who were not particularly keen on the three round burst limitation. So it used the M16A1 trigger group.

How come the M4 carbine in CoD4 is fully auto isn't the m4 carbine the three round burst version of the M4A1?
