You would be referring to a hard drive.

They are not cylinders, they are flat round platters or plates.

The "head" changes the magnetization of the platter thus translating to a 1 or 0 which is binary code. The hard drives reads this as well and it translates to data, then your computer's various hardware translates that into a visual representation.
