$40.62 / 12.5 gallons = $3.2496 a gallon = $3.25 a gallon- rounded
But if this question is for a logic class, it can be assumed that if the tank holds 12.5 gallons, they would have filled up only 12 gallons of gas as it is not possible to drive on an empty tank.
$40.62 / 12 gallons = 3.385 = $3.39 a gallon.
