Merits and demerits of friction

• Friction allows us to walk.
• without friction the objects will slide off the table unless it is perfectly horizontal.
• it would be difficult to sit on a chair without friction.
• friction helps in supporting a ladder inclined to a wall.
• friction provides the reaction which makes a car and train move

Demerits:

• Friction in machines produces heat and
• undesirable noise.
• as a result of excessive friction,the wear and tear on the machines increases.
• energy is wasted.
