He created a method by which mathematical tables could be calculated mechanically thus removing human error. He invented a device for calculating mathematical and astromomical tables. He invented the 'cow catcher' a metal device in front of trains to clear the track. He achieved some results in Cryptography. He also invented the Opthalmoscope, but gave it away for someone else to test and it was fortotten for the time being
