The Catholic Church does not have a "list" of sins. Simply, a mortal sin is a sin that merits hell. For a sin to be considered mortal three conditions need to be met:

* Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter * Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner * Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

There are three criteria to distinguish mortal sin from venial sin. Mortal sins are those which involve grave matter, full knowledge that it is indeed grave matter, and full consent of the will. Short of all three a sin would be venial.

Is it a mortal sin for someone who was Catholic to leave the Church and get married in a protestant church and have her sisters and brother in the wedding?

.Catholic AnswerThe short answer is "yes" it is a mortal sin. Leaving the Catholic Church is a mortal sin, it is called apostasy and is *very* serious. Getting married in a protestant church without permission is a serious sin. Leading others into sin is called scandal and is a very serious sin (your brother and sisters). Inviting anyone who is Catholic to this wedding would be several serious sins, starting with scandal. All in all, this scenario is just racking up serious mortal sins like they are going out of style. I would suggest that you call your pastor, make an appointment, and sit down and discuss all of this with him, and possibly make a confession at the same time, and see what can be worked out. By the way, there is no such thing as "was Catholic", there is only a Catholic who is not attending Mass and confession, that is a Catholic who is living in mortal sin, which, needless to say, has eternal consequences.

Should I confess mortal sins?

Yes, all mortal sins should be confessed as soon as possible and one should abstain from receiving Communion until one had been absolved - or else one is guilty of committing sacrilege - another Mortal Sin. Mortal sins destroy our relationship with God and depending on the gravity could lead to damnation if one dies without confession. See the Catechism of the Catholic Church for more information on sin 1855-1874.

What is necessary for penance to be considered valid in the Catholic church?

Roman Catholic AnswerIf you are talking about the sacrament of Penance, then it is necessary to have a baptised Catholic who is of age confessing ALL of his unforgiven mortal sins to a validly consecrated priest or Bishop, to be truly sorry for his sins, and to have a firm intention of not committing them again. The priest must then absolve the penitent and impose a penance on him, which must be fulfilled.
