"Greasy Grass" is the Lakota name for the "Battle of Little Bighorn", where the Sioux defeated the 7th Cavalry on June 25 and June 26, 1876. The battle took place near the Little Bighorn River in eastern Montana Territory, and is famous for "Custer's Last Stand", where commander George Armstrong Custer died, along with many of his men.
The White American name of the river where the battle took place (The Little Bighorn) comes straight from its Crow name, Iisaxpúatahcheeaashe Aliakáate or Small Bighorn Sheep River - referring to the many bighorn sheep found in the area. Since the battle took place entirely on Crow land, this name is very appropriate.The Crows called the battlefield site Ihkaléaxdaakua Alahaawíio - Where Child of the Morning Star Was Wiped Out. "Child of the Morning Star" was the Crow name for Lt Col Custer.The Lakota Sioux and their allies prefer the name "Greasy Grass River", using it to mean the battlefield site (but of course it really means the entire course of the Little Bighorn).The reason for this Lakota name for the river has never been explained, but the Crows apply the term Bikkaatashé (Greasy Grass) to the area of land between Lodge Grass and Rotten Grass Creek, some distance south of the battlefield.

In 1876 both the Bighorn and Little Bighorn rivers were within the territory of the Crow tribe, who gave both rivers those names (in the Crow language); these were translated and used by local white Americans. George Armstrong Custer was killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn July 25-26, 1876 in Montana.The name of the battle is the Little Big Horn, and is also the name of the place it took place. Also Custer and his men were not massacred they went looking for a fight and got one. It was a military blunder on Custer's behalf he was too overly confident that he could defeat the Sioux.
There are a lot of Indian leaders who fought in many historic battles, but to name a few are Black Elk he fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn, then there was famous for fighting in the War of 1812, and then Red Cloud who fought in the Red Cloud war.
