scholares used to count the time with rising of stars in the East horiszon of some place. Thus they found the ecliptic is revolving in the sky with the motion of earth in every 23hours 56 minute approx as the sun travels average 1 degree backward per day.

Later they divided the ectiptic in 12 equal sections of 30 degree and put different names and signs to identify the rising of particular parts of the ecliptic. These are actually Zodiac signs.

They are identified with the fixed star combinations in the sky. All planets moves round this zodiac belt.

The ZODIAC is simply created by man, not by God. Hindu scholars in the same way divide the ecliptic in 27 equal parrt which they called 27 Nakhatras of moon. Each part is equal to average transit space of moon which is 13 degree 20 minutes.
