By this do you mean the lyrics with the letter above the words? Well this denotes the chord. This is useful for playing a song that you know, you read/sing the words and as you come to the chord above the word that is when you play that chord. If you do not know the song then its harder to follow as it will not tell you the melody line or what tempo, time signature of the song.

The solfege or solfeggio system uses the syllables do (or ut), re, mi, fa, sol, la, and ti to indicate the degrees of the scale. Only "ti" is made up: the first six come from a Latin hymn where the syllables fall on their corresponding scale degree:

Ut queant laxis resonare fibris

Mira gestorum famuli tuorum

Solve polluti labii reatum

Sancte Iohannes.

They are called solfège. They can also be called sol-fa syllables. It is the do re mi fa sol la ti do.
