The disadvantages on the goldfields of Australia included;

The Aboriginal people of the time being pushed to the side, and losing more of their land.
Many workers in the cities and the country just downed tools and left for the goldfields. Families were left without a father and without an income.
There was a lot of racism aimed at the Chinese. The European people did not like the Chinese people at all because the Chinese people were more thorough and had a different mining technique,allowing them to find a lot more gold than the European people. The Chine also did not spend their gold in Australia: they hoarded it and returned to China, so Australia's wealth went with them. Resentment over this led to the development of the White Australia Policy which prevailed in Australia right into the twentieth century.
The next main disadvantage is that the goldfields were virtually lawless, and the traps (police) could be easily bribed.
The goldfields were also unsanitary places, where diseases such as dysentery and cholera were common.
