For most Briggs and Stratton engines the charging system is under the flywheel. You will have to remove all the shields that cover the top of the engine and the flywheel and then remove the flywheel itself. Once the flywheel is off the stator is exposed. Depending on what model you have there will be a series of screws that hold it to the block. Just unplug the wire connector and remove the screws and it will come off with a little wiggling. Make sure that all the magnets on the bottom side of the flywheel are in place and secure or replacing the stator will not do you any good.

Your mower gets it spark from a coil that is under the engine shroud. There is a magnet on the flywheel that with each revolution causes the coil to spark. Possible problems are: 1) There is too much rust on the coil or flywheel to let the current go between the two. Taking them apart and lightly sanding them until you get a clean metal surface usually takes care of this problem. 2) If it is a riding mower, there is a ground wire that shorts out the coils which stops the mower when the key is turned off. If the ignition switch is bad it should cause a no spark issue. Or, the wire could be pinched somewhere and killing the engine. You can remove the spark plug, unplug the small black wire off of the coil and see if it sparks then. If it does then this is your problem. 3) The coil itself could be bad.

There are a few components which could cause this, you will have to test them one at a time until you find the one that has failed. First, some of the LT80's had a circuit breaker on them make sure that hasn't been tripped, if it has just reset it. Next, check the ignition switch and the kill switch on handlebar and also the wiring harness, make sure they test good and they are plugged in. Check the spark plug (replace if unsure), spark plug cap and have the ignition coil tested, if good, then check the stator coils (they are the coils under the flywheel in the motor. If they test good then you will have to replace the CDI box (brain box).
