When I sailed on merchant ships to India in the mid 1970's, I took a bus tour from one of the Southern India seaports. The details are far from clear. The port was likely either Madras or Cochin, both of which now go by more authentic names rather than these given to them by English colonial rulers.… During a 32 hour time off from my shift work engine room job took a bus tour to one or more temples. The unique aspect of one temple was a tree which was completely surrounded by the mundane architecture of the temple walls which it seemed were only there to showcase, and perhaps protect the tree. My well faded memory recalls being told that the tree was 3 or perhaps 5 thousand years old mango tree. My Indian friends, some of whom are from Southern India, have never heard of this tree temple. They further challenge my recollection with a uniform response that it could not have been a mango tree because they have relatively short lives. They offer an alternative tree, but their description of this other tree doesn't begin to match the imagine in my mind of a vast, sprawling, truly majestic icon. I'd love to hear that somebody out there can share some small morsel of enlightenment about this mystery of mine. ( Full Answer )
