That's a tough question to answer because of all the variables like aircraft speed, weight, altitude, winds, and whether or not you are including climb out and descent, etc. On average, you can figure that a modern day commercial airliner travels at around 8 miles per minute in cruise. In other words, it would take a little over 2 hours to travel the 1000 miles at altitude. However, a 1000 mile trip would take a little longer as you would have to figure the additional time needed for the climb to altitude and descent to the airport. Here's a way how to get a "rough" idea of how long a flight will take once you know the distance. Using nautical miles, take the distance (1000 nm) and subtract 100 nm for the climb to altitude, then subtract 120 nm or the descent, and finally, divide the remainder by 8. This will give you about 97 minutes at cruise. Add 20 minutes for the climb and 20 minutes for the descent and you will have an "approximate" total flight time...in our example, it would be 97+20+20=137, which is 2 hours and 17 minutes. That would be from take off to landing, so if you wanted to be more accurate, you could add in taxi time to and from the gate. Again, this is only a rough estimate, but it will get you in the ball park.
