The largest tornado ever recorded was the 2.6 mile wide monster that hit near El Reno, Oklahoma in 2013. However, size does not necessarily correspond to a tornado's rating. Ratings are based on the severity of the damage a tornado inflicts. The El Reno tornado was officially rated EF3 but there are some indicators that it may have reached EF5 intensity, the highest rating possible.
