These ions are called "spectator" ions.

Spectator ions do not actively participate in the chemical reaction but remain in the solution unchanged. They are components of the reaction mixture that do not react with the other ions present. An example is the sodium ion in a reaction involving silver nitrate and sodium chloride, where sodium remains in solution while silver chloride precipitates out.
When a precipitation reaction occurs, ions that do not form the precipitate remain in the solution. These ions are called spectator ions and do not participate in the formation of the solid precipitate. They are still present in the solution, but they do not contribute to the solid formed.
Spectator ions do not change in a chemical reaction as they appear in the reactants and products in the same ionic form. They do not participate in the reaction and are typically omitted when writing net ionic equations.

A spectator ion is an ion which does not participate in a reaction. Zn(s) + H2SO4 (aq) -----> ZnSO4 (aq) + H2 (g) That is the equation. The Zn goes from a solid to aqeous therefore it reacted. The Hydrogen in H2SO4 went from (aq) to (g) therefore it reacted. The SO4 however went from (aq) to (aq) and therefore didn't react and is therefore a spectator ion.

Carbonic acid. The reaction is: H2O + CO2 -----> H2CO3 ----> H+ + HCO3- The reaction is catalysed by an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase. After it has formed it separates (dissociates) into hydrogen ions (H+) and hydrogen carbonate ions (HCO3-).
