In other words, why isn't it standardized so that the underdog always gets plus points next to the name? Or the other way around, why don't they just list the favorite with minus next to the name? Why is it mixed and matched depending on the game?
The point spread in football is simple. It is never "mixed and matched" depending on the game. However, it does seem backward until you think about it. If a team is favored by 6.5 points, then it has a -6.5 point spread. They must "make up" 6.5 points to "beat the spread". The underdog would therefore have a + 6.5 spread.
