the 1905 was probably the first semi auto rifle made. (Remington 8 was made around that time also) about 29,000 were made between 1905 and 1920 (including variations 1907 and 1910)
the early models were .32wsl or, more commonly, .35wsl. later models included a .351wsl and a .401 wsl version
the rounds used for these guns are specific to the guns. cant be used anywhere else and the guns wont accept any other ammo (don't try and put .35 Remington in!)
the guns gained some popularity with prison guards, especially those on chain gang detail!
the .35 and 351 rounds are similar to todays 357 as far as ballistics go.
the 1905 is hard to come by in better than avg condition, and NOBODY makes cartriges for them anymore (Winchester stopped making 351 cartriges in the early 1980's) the only way to fire these nowadays is to load em yourself, not a cheap route as the casings for the 35's are modified from other caliber casings and the reloading dies are expensive.
The value of a pre 64 model 70 cal. 270 in good shape will go for somewhere around 1200.00 to 1800.00.. with out anykind of a scope.
