He stole fire from them. As a result, Zeus chained him to a mountain in the Caucasus Range for all of eternity where an eagle would eat his liver daily. His liver would regenerate by night only to have the process repeat. Eventually, he was freed by Hercules.

Prometheus stole "fire", and was later punished for this and other transactions by Zeus.

The oldest version of this story relates that because all of the "gifts" for creation were allotted to the other animals by Epimetheus, Prometheus gifted man by allowing him to walk upright on two legs, like the gods, and also to have access to fire. When Zeus came to inspect creation, Prometheus had taught men how to make sacrifice to the gods. He instructed the men to take the choicest cuts of meat and wrap them in the entrails (something wholesome, but unappetizing in appearance), and then to take the bones, sinew and grizzle and to wrap in in the trimmed fat (something inedible made to look delicious). Zeus took the latter, which set the precedent for all sacrifices to come.

In his anger at men, and with Prometheus for tricking him, Zeus took away the gift of fire. Seeing his creations huddling in the cold darkness, he sneaked to Olympus and stole fire again from the sacred Hearth and gave it back to men, this time teaching them how to make it for themselves. When Zeus discovered the treachery, he sentenced Prometheus to being chained against a maintain in the Caucasus range and having his liver eaten daily by a giant eagle. Since he was immortal, he would renew himself nightly only to be tortured anew the next day.

Men, for accepting the gift, were punished with the introduction of WOMAN, in the form of Pandora, whose curiosity brought all the ill and suffering we know of into the world.

Fire, which is why he was punished by the Gods. They tied him onto a mountain and let birds eat his internal organs. Every day they would grow back, then the birds come back.
