The movie is basically about how a popular guy, Landon Carter, gets himself into trouble and is forced to participate in the school play. He gets help from Jamie Sullivan, a simple schoolgirl, and a reverend's daughter who has nothing in common with Landon. As Landon spends more time with Jamie, he falls in love with her and before he knows it, they're in a relationship together until Jamie tells him she has leukemia, and that she had stopped responding to treatments. This causes a struggle in their relationship; but in the end they do get married, and as a after-story, Landon himself becomes a medical student, visits Jamie's father to return Jamie's beloved bible and lives on with his life.
