The reason Nova Scotia joined Canadian Confederation (and didn't join the American Declaration of Independence in 1776) was because of the Citadel in the middle of the town (which was under British Rule)... If Nova Scotia joined the U.S. Declaration of Independence, it would've most likely ended British Rule in North America (I.E. we'd be part of the states). But, we were close...

-They would have protection against Fenian attacks.
-A railway would be built, making trade easier and extends where they can sell/buy.
-It would end political dead locks.
Disadvantages
-They could easily trade overseas, the railway isn't really needed.
-They wouldn't have much say in what goes on, because they are so small.
-Closer connection to people in Boston and cities in Maine than people from Quebec and Ontario.
-Could have supported themselves better, had they joined the U.S.A.
