  • History of infection or disease that rendered her infertile
  • Cow is a freemartin (sterile because she had a twin brother sharing the placenta with her)
  • She has poor body condition (way too thin or way too fat)
  • She is malnourished (you're not providing adequate nutrition for her)
  • She could have cystic ovaries
  • She could have genetic abnormalities such as detached ovaries, detached uterus, etc.
  • She's too young to even be ready to breed
  • She's too old to breed
  • She could by cystic (have cystic ovaries)
  • It's too hot for her to breed (heat stress)
  • She could be ill and have an infection that is preventing her from settling
  • The bull could be shooting blanks (infertile, broken penis, low sperm count, etc.)
  • Cow could have aborted early due to some disease she has or received from the bull (i.e., trichomoniasis)

The biggest reason that a cow comes up open is nutritional. When she's not getting the nutrition she needs to keep her body condition normal and keep her fertile, she will not get pregnant. Genetics and disease are only the other half of the possible problems that could be the reason she's not getting bred.
