As with all groups of young men, nicknames are given out as to looks, demeanor or actions. In this case there were 3 Johnsons on the Missouri river. They were attacked on a rainy day by the Sioux. Johnson stabbed a brave and pretended to eat his liver in front of one of the youngsters that was new in the area. His cohorts or peers started calling him Liver Eating Johnson.
