In the preliminary stage of tanning i.e. from raw hides to wet blue, chemicals such as Basic Chrome Sulphate, Lime, Soda bi carb etc. are used, the residue water coming out after tanning will pollute the Yamuna river, which is flowing around Taj Mahal. So, considering the overall damage it may cause to Taj Mahal, the decision of Government of India to ban tanneries around Taj Mahal is most appropriate.

After erection of Taj Mahal, it is believed that, ShahJahan wanted to build another Taj Mahal, across the other side of river Yamuna, with black marble. According to his proposal, a bridge was to be constructed and joining two, the white Taj Mahal Mumtaz's Tomb and black Taj mahal Shahjahan's Tomb.
