Metamorphic Rocks are formed two ways:

Regional Metamorphism

Contact Metamorphism

In regional, two plates collide and through pressure and friction to change igneous rock to metamorphic.

In contact (more familiar to me) lava (hot liquid?) contacts any type of rock and doesn't not melt but sorta loosens it up so the crystals inside can rearrange.
