When exploration started it kicked off the Renaissance. As people began to explore new worlds they came home with new ideas, food, spices, silks, art, and other things and this added to the society that was all ready just starting to wake up after a 1000 years of "darkness". Men returning from the Crusades also brought home new ideas, science, math, and thinking so again there was pressure put on the society to look at things in a new light. Added to this were new inventions. One of the major inventions was the printing press because it unleashed the stranglehold that the church had over knowledge. Men were able to read what The Bible said instead of the church telling them what it said. This meant that man could communicate directly with God as Michelangelo showed in this Sistine painting of Adam reaching for the hand of God. He was expressing the new thought of the time and it was all of these things coming together that created the Renaissance.
