1 Samuel 2:1-10 - And Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the Lord; My horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For the Lord is the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty men are broken, And those who stumbled are girded with strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble. The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. "For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, And He has set the world upon them. He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. "For by strength no man shall prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of His anointed."This prayer is a "song" of praise by Hannah, the mother of Samuel, and is prophetic in nature. It speaks of worldly wisdom and values (the proud talk and arrogance of v3) being overturned by spiritual enlightenment which the proud and powerful will reject (to their loss…"The bows of the mighty men are broken," v4), and the poor and lowly will embrace (the "hungry" who have ceased to hunger of v5). It helps to remember than Hannah had been infertile (1 Samuel 1:5), and her prayers resulted in the birth of Samuel, whom she dedicated to God's service (1 Samuel 1:11). The parallels between Hannah/Samuel and Mary/Jesus are impossible for the careful Bible student to miss, and there is striking similarity between Hannah's prayer of praise and Thanksgiving in 1 Samuel 2:1-10 and Mary's song of praise for being chosen to bring the Savior into the world, recorded in Luke 1, particularly verses 51-53: He [God] has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He hasfilled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. This reversal of values is realized in the spiritual wisdom of Christ's teachings as opposed to the earthly wisdom of men; for brief example: Matthew 5:5, 6 -Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Matthew 23:12 - And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. The Apostle Paul explains the concept to the church at Corinth this way: 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 - But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. Compare the passage above and Luke 1:51-53 with 1 Samuel 2:8 - He raises the poor from the dustand lifts the beggar from the ash heap, to set them among princes and make them inherit the throne of glory. The same wondrous idea is being spoken of in each passage. This teaching is repeated in other New Testament passages such as James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5. [All quotations are from the NKJV.]
