A major problem with metric versus Imperial measures are that using them in non-SI equations can cause error in conversions. This is especially important when critical tolerances are needed, thus making instrumentation and machining often standardized to metric.

It allows them to effectively communicate the size of whatever thing they are measuring so that anyone else who can use the international system can understand them. It is like speaking the same language. It doesn't matter what language you are speaking as long as your audience understands that language. It just so happens that a lot of people in many countries understand the international system. By using that system, scientists are able to communicate with all those people.
