Protons were discovered when the nucleus of atoms were discovered. Electrons were already known about, so when the nucleus was discovered, it was known that it had to contain positively charged particles: protons.
The nucleus was discovered by Ernest Rutherford by shooting alpha particles (helium nuclei, basically helium without the electrons) at a thin sheet of gold. Most of the alpha particles went straight through, but some if them were scattered. Rutherford deduced that these particles had hit something in the foil that didn't take up a large percentage of space: the nuclei of the gold atoms.
The person who discovered protons was Rutherford, and the person who discovered neutrons was Chadwick, and the person who discovered electrons was Thomson, just in case you were wondering for some reason.

By the sum of protons and neutrons we obtain the mass number of the atom which is written at the top of the atom periodic number. We can also obtain the mass number by adding the atomic number and the number of neutrons because the atomic number and the number of protons are same. You know that scientists have discovered some particles which are smaller than protons and neutrons and these are known as quartz.
In 1932, James Chadwick discovered the neutron. Neutrons help stabilize the protons in the atom's nucleus. Because the nucleus is so tightly packed together, the positively charged protons would tend to repel each other normally. Neutrons help to reduce the repulsion between protons and stabilize the atom's nucleus. Neutrons always reside in the nucleus of atoms and they are about the same size as protons. However, neutrons do not have any electrical charge; they are electrically neutral.
