The same think happened to the same model rifle I've owned for 40 years. The ejector is a piece of spring steel that is attached to clip holder, and next to the offset where the stock screw is screwed in. To fix it, I removed the stock bolt, removed the single screw that holds the ejector spring in place and bent the spring slightly to make contact with the bolt again. Put it back together and now everything ejects well. Any gunsmith can perform the operation and test the mechanism. I have fired dozens of rounds since bending the spring..and no failures so far...see your local gunsmith for what is probably a quick fix. If he says not to bend the spring, or if yours is broken...I believe these are Marlin model 80 22LRs, manufactured with the Sears name on it....

A Sears Mod 53 is a Winchester Mod 70. If Sears doesn't have an owner's manual for the 53 (and you can't find one on eBay), go here http://www.stevespages.com/page7b.htm for a Winchester manual.
