Based on the question, I am assuming that this relates to a retail sales environment. There are many ways to increase your sales proficiency, but I'll focus on 3 easy activities:
1. Contact and greet your customers in a positive, professional manner. Welcome them, introduce yourself, find out what brought them in to your store, etc. This CANNOT be accomplished by saying "May/ Can I help you?". This often comes out as "Melpu?" - the universal bad sales clerk greeting.
2. Ask questions to discover what the customer really wants / needs / desires. In some situations, the customer can exactly describe what they want (" I want a blue shirt in size 16). However, the sales assistant often needs to ask numerous questions to discover how / what / why / when. These questions are asked for two people to hear the answers - you, and the customer (they may not have thought about all of the right factors).
3. Based on answers to the questions, suggest a solution IF YOU HAVE ONE. You can use words like "based on what you've told me, this would be a good fit." However, if you don't have a reasonable solution, TELL THEM. Don't waste their time (or your's) trying to get them to buy something that doesn't match their needs.
If you do these 3 things, your sales will definitely increase.
Cheers!
