Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the short story "The Portable Phonograph" begins in a cave with two older men, a musician, and Dr. Jenkins, who has saved four books and a portable phonograph, sitting around fire weekly social event. The guests ask Dr. Jenkins to play the phonograph. Everyone seems to enjoy the music, but the musician, who is sick with a painful cough, starts behaving strangely. The Two older men leave politely where as the musician leaves abruptly, so Dr. Jenkins becomes suspicious of him. A short while later, Jenkins suspicious are confirmed when he hears a cough outside. Quickly and nervously, Jenkins hides his things, and goes to bed with a pipe in his hand.
