This is a matter for debate- some people think it should, others that it shouldn't. Corporal punishment in prisons was outlawed in the early 1970s, although flogging and caning remained legal in schools until 1988.

My own feeling is that it should not, having been to a school that was run by many sadistic and cruel teachers who used corporal punishment at the slightest excuse- there is also no evidence that it has any effect upon reducing the number of offences committed. However, it remains a matter of personal opinion, although as things stand now, it is illegal everywhere in the British isles except the Isle of Mann, where 'birching' remains legal. However, only Manx citizens are usually subjected to this- there was a high-profile case about 20 years ago where 6 young Englishmen were sentenced to be birched on Mann after being drunk and disorderly, and the British Government theatened to send the army in to rescue them if sentence went ahead. The terrified government of the tiny island immediately dropped the case!!

Surprisingly corporal punishment is used by bears and apes to discipline their offspring and many other animal species use physical punishment to discipline their wayward young.

A young child's brain is too immature to comprehend the consequences of some of their actions. A short sharp shock is therefore occasionally necessary teach the child to comply with acceptable behaviour.

It is very important to make a clear distinction between a sharp shock used with love and discretion to teach a child to behave properly and indiscriminate beatings and abuse.

No, because kids should not fear abuse in school. Plus, allowing teacher to inflict physical punishment on kids will open the schools up to lawsuits.
