If the ear drum is in danger of rupturing from the pressure, a doctor can place tubes in the ear surgically to relieve the pressure. This still puts a small hole in the ear drum, but it has clean edges and is smaller so it has a much better chance of healing well. There isn't anything you can do at home about this, however.
