Exercising regularly, drinking plenty of water, and eating a well-rounded diet are excellent ways to promote healthy bowel function. Many people think they need to have a bowel movement every day, but the reality is that people's bodies vary, and healthy adults range from three bowel movements per day to three per week.

Your symptoms seem to fit the definition of constipation if you have less than three bowel movements per week, a subjective sensation of hard stools, a sensation of incomplete bowel evaluation, or straining during more than 25% of bowel movements. Long-term constipation can result in damage to your large intestine or hemorrhoids caused by blood-vessel breaks from straining to pass hard stools.

According to the nurse my friend had in the hospital, you should have at least one bowel movement every day, even if you have been too ill to eat for several days, so you should have an enema if you miss a day.

However, according to my yoga instructor, how often you have a bowel movement depends on what and how much you eat. He said that most people will have a bowel movement within 24 hours of eating, so you might miss some days if you are fasting or ill. He indicated that you might miss a day if you eat very little, but might have several in a day if you eat a high fiber diet.

How long from eating until that meal is defacated?

It varies. Some individuals have a very rapid and pronounced gastrocolic reflex (the reflex that stimulates your colon to begin defecation after your stomach has encountered a meal), while others have less efficient reflexes. In my opinion, the gastrocolic reflex of some individuals is effectively useless, as it does not stimulate the bowel sufficiently to trigger a bowel movement anywhere near the time of a meal. Keep in mind that the normal range for bowel movement frequency is anywhere between three times a day to once ever three weeks. A BOWEL MOVEMENT ONCE IN THREE WEEKS IS NOT NORMAL. IT IS CONSTIPATION. IN YOUR DAILY LIFE OF HABIT (E.G. NOT TRAVELING), ONE SHOULD BE POOPING NO LESS THAN ONCE A DAY.
