Fence repair is a lucrative business because the majority of do-it-yourself homeowners don't know or don't care about the proper techniques and materials necessary for the proper installation of a fence. The problems that arise from improper or inadequate installation are two-fold. The fence will either fail spectacularly in a particularly violent storm or it will slowly, but inexorably, succumb to the natural upheavals and settling of the soil. The first step in repairing a fence is not the most obvious. The rails and slats can be always be affixed at the end. The primary repair should start with the posts. The use of a level should ensure that the posts are plumb in both directions. If not they should be dug out and replaced being sure to keep them in line with the undamaged posts. Once the support posts are properly aligned and installed, the repair of the non-structural parts of the fence can begin. Reattach the upper stringers, also known as rails. These are the lengths of wood that stretch between the posts and should be secured with the appropriate metal supports or with wooden support blocks from underneath. Now, attach the bottom rail. Be sure that it is level and in line with the other, undamaged, bottom rails. It may be necessary to remove some soil to allow the rail to sit properly. Do not skip this step as it is important as it will affect the final aesthetic appeal of the fence. Once this installation is complete, measure, cut and nail the vertical fence slats so that a level line is created along the top of the fence. Finally, if necessary, stain or paint the fence to match the pre-existing structure. There is no doubt that a sufficiently destructive storm will destroy the best designed and installed fence. Nevertheless, the proper installation and the proper repair of a fence is the cheapest alternative in the long run.
