The term Buddha (the Enlightened One) is generally taken to mean Siddhartha Gautama, an Indian prince who lived 2500 years ago. A such he was not "invented". Siddhartha's thoughts on the nature of human suffering and its possible cure have come to be known as Buddhism.
Siddhartha Gautama renounced his life of luxury, including his princely status, wealth, and family, in search of spiritual enlightenment and to seek a solution to the suffering in the world. He was motivated by a deep desire to understand the nature of human existence and find a path to alleviate suffering for himself and others.

Siddhartha Gautama, ca. 480--400 B.C.E., who was widely known as "the Buddha," was an Indian mendicant whose teachings about overcoming human dissatisfaction are the basis of Buddhism. .
Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as the Buddha. Siddhartha was an aristocrat who renounced his wealth and status to seek enlightenment and alleviate human suffering. He founded Buddhism based on his teachings of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
He discovered suffering, which his father had tried to shield him from. So, he set out in search for the cause of human suffering, but in order to do this he had to leave his family. He was willing to do this.
Buddha originally Siddhartha Gautama. He was a Prince and his family did not open him up to unpleasant things. One day he left and saw sadness, illness, and old age for the first time. One day while he was meditating under a tree the answer came to him. Then he became known as "Buddha" or "The Enlightened One". It depends upon what branch of Buddhism you are looking at. If you are looking at the branch that has Christianity in it, (in my opinion, this branch takes away all of Siddhartha's teachings, like how you must reach nirvana on your own) then he was a god. (Mahayana Buddhism) If you are looking at the original version, (Theravada, or Hinayana Buddhism) it stresses that Siddhartha was only human.
In northern India, around 2,500 years ago, a young prince named Siddhartha Gautama lived a sheltered life of luxury. His parents kept him hidden from the world of human poverty and suffering. Siddhartha's parents believed he would be better off if he thought the world was a place free of sadness and pain. As a young man, Siddhartha ventured outside his home. He discovered a world he had not known to exist. Siddhartha saw death, illness, and grief. However, he also encountered a holy man, full of peace and self-assurance. At that moment, Siddhartha decided that he wanted to understand two things. Why did people suffer? Why was peace radiating from the holy man he had seen on the road? Siddhartha gave up his physical belongings and material wealth. He set out on a journey to find answers to his questions. Eventually, Siddhartha shared his philosophicaldiscoveries with other people. Siddhartha Gautama became known as the Buddha. His teachings form the foundation of the major world religion Buddhism.
