a French fireman is UN POMPIER; he is a member of the Sapeurs-Pompiers, which deals with fire, flood and emergency medical services. They are officially military and hold parades on important days, especially 14 July. They are also very good at firework displays. They have splendid heat reflective silver helmets which while being effective also refer back to the brass helmets they used to wear in the 19th. century. The emergency medical service is called SAMU and is very efficient.

The french firemen are military only in Paris (sapeurs pompiers) and in Marseille (bataillon de marins pompiers de Marseille), belonging to the Defense Ministry. They are civil in the rest of the country. Most of the pompiers are volunteers.
