First of all, if you have a pet that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home. The quicker you get to a pet stain the better. Some technical tips on urine: When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed. Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH. When this happens it will continue to increase in alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia. This explains the ammonia like odor. At this stage the urine dramatically affects the dye structure of the carpet. To clean the urine spot: Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel. If you have a small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it.Do not use over the counter spot removers or all-purpose cleaners on urine! You may set the spot permanently!
Well..... to remove odors from carpet-you should probably find the source of the odor (pet urine spot, for instance) after the spot has been cleaned, clean it with baking soda(ie pour a little bit on the spot and rub in 1 direction with paper towels.) After using a few paper towels, and the spot has been cleaned, pour a little more baking soda on the spot. vacuum it up later when it is dry. but if a spot in your carpet is not the source of the smell, I would get rid of the source. That will work better (wont produce smells anymore)

In chromatography, Rf is the distance the solute travels divided by the distance the mobile phase travels. For example, in thin layer chromatography, if the spot travels 7 cm, and the mobile phase travels 15 cm, the Rf value for that spot will be 7/15 = 0.47
