The cactus is the plant most often linked to the desert. Cactus thrive in the hot environment with limited water, they are often how animals get water.
Plant roots absorb water, and water is one of the three ingredients which plants need in order to carry out photosynthesis, the others being carbon dioxide, which they get from the air, and sunlight.
Foe plants they need water to survive or they will dry up and they need water for photosynthesis which is how they get their food. Animals need it to to stat hydrated and healthy or the will die of dehydration.
The importance of water in plants is, that a plant sucks up water from the ground to give to it's chloroplasts [clor-o plasts] wich makes a white sugary substance that is the plant's only food supply
Plant cells need to remain in a turgid, or swollen, state. Wilted plants have lost this turgidity. Because plant cells are surrounded by a cell wall, they can maintain a higher water potential than animal cells. This allows them to conserve water for later use. Plants have evolved to function in this turgid state, and when their water potential drops their metabolism is effected.

The barrel cactus can be a plant that animals can get water from in the desert.
Aquatic animals still breathe oxygen, even if in water. If there's little oxygen dissolved in the water, they will suffocate.
oxygen is dissolved in water and is also important for the survival of aquactic animals and plants
