copper is extracted by smelting by taking the copper out and melting it down.
Smelting is primarily a process of firing an ore to extract the metal from it. Coal doesn't really have any metal in it; carbon is a non-metal. There's nothing to smelt. The process of smelting coal isn't something one would consider. Coal can be burned to create heat. It can be heated to recover coal gas, the volatile compounds that are in the coal but can be extracted (driven off) by heating in an atmosphere without oxygen.
Magnesium exists in several useful minerals in the Earth, of which Dolomite and Bauxite are two. In recent years, China has become the dominant supplier on world markets, (60%) and they use a silicon reduction process (Pidgeon process) for refining. In the US, an electrolytic process is used. Simple quarrying machinery is used to extract the above ores from the ground.
It's possible to do so (if you mean extract iron from iron pyrite) , but because pyrite is exothermic, it creates a hazard in mines. Also, it is much more economical to extract iron from other minerals. Pyrite is also geologically unstable, and will eventually turn into sulfurous minerals and actually viable iron ores, so it is best left for future mines. Pyrite is really only worth it for making sulfuric acid or jewelry.

Smelting.
To extract minerals there are three steps. These steps are mining, smelting, refining. First, the ore must be mined. Then it goes to a process where it is smelted to extract the minerals. Finally, it is refined where the mineral is purified.

Mining
To refine an ore means to extract the valuable metal that is inside the ore.
Metals are generally mined in the form of ore. Ore is processed to extract the metal from the ore (known as smelting)
The refining of partially radioactive raw materials such as stone and dirt to extract the radioactive portion for use as nuclear fuel. One example, the use of a nuclear centrifuge to spin the raw material, using the difference in specific gravity to separate and extract the final product.
After the initial smelting to extract copper from the ore it still has to go through electroplating purification.
